What Will You Get In A Hard Disk Upgrade?

If you need another space for your hard drive, all you need to do is simply upgrade your hard disk which is the easiest thing to do. It doesn’t require a lot of knowledge on how to install and additional hard drive. In the market today, there are disk capacities up to 160 Gb that can be bought in less than $100 only. Though you are required to have your operating system re-partitioned or according to the space you want to use, it could be sometimes a hassle during the process. You will learn what the drawbacks are when you want to add a new hard drive installed.

For those who are new to the computer world, if you think that your hard disk is already full due to lack of virtual memory, simply adding a new hard disk to the computer will not solve the problem. The data needs to be transported to the new hard disk that is quite time-consuming. And while doing that, this would sometimes affect the applications to be searching files in the wrong places or folders. So you have to be very careful in moving files. Normally, people would think of replacing the existing hard drive with a new one. And most often times, we presume that the hard drive is getting issues in which it is not always the case.

Retail hard disk upgrade kit are available in any computer shop. And as part of the full package, it does have a software which is provided by the manufacturer that could actually create an exact copy of the old hard disk to the new hard disk. In this case, the new hard disk will also be bootable. Wonderful, right? And moving files or data will be easier this time but it will just take some good time for it. One advantage of this software is that it will delete the data of your old hard disk, it will retain it and it is quite secured even if the drive jumpers will be moved. Or alternatively, one can use the Ghost, a known utility to make image copy of the old hard drive to a new drive.

With the exception of the new SATA drives today, IDE hard drives are thought to be backwards compatible. It has not issues of it runs in old controllers as it could support their transfer speed. So getting upgrades on hard disk is not a problem at all. With the right family of technology (ATA instead of SCSI), compatibility will not be a setback if one decides to have hard disk upgrades. Nonetheless, those laptops and notebook may not support this much as they have BIOS limitations on how many drives it could support.

The drawback of simply replacing the hard drive is that you can’t have two drives to run at the same in the computer or one that will require you to have a 3.5″ to 5.25″ frame kit if you want to add another drive. For laptops or portables, replacing a hard disk could be challenging. Aside from that, you have the possibility of getting power supply issues. So you could continue to copy the existing drive to the new one, you need to borrow the power supply lead of the other drive. And after that, you can take the lead off the old hard drive which gets removed later on.
